Return of the Prodigal Son, After Rembrandt

In Jesus’ parable, the son, after squandering his inheritance, returns home, repentant and begging to be a servant in his father’s household. His father forgives and embraces him, restoring him to full sonship. The father’s robe, which Rembrandt paints red, symbolizes the blood of Christ which covers our sin. The exhausted and desperate son grasps the robe, clinging to the grace which envelops him.
